What is the Fishbowl Game?

The Fishbowl Game is a party game that combines elements of charades, taboo, and Pictionary. It requires minimal preparation and can be played with a medium to large group of adults (you’ll need at least four guests). The game revolves around guessing words or phrases written on pieces of paper and placed inside a “fish bowl”.

The Fishbowl Game: How to Play

    • Setup: Get your guests and friends alike together and split them into teams – the more, the merrier! Each team picks one person to be the “reader” for round one.

    • The Fishbowl: Now, grab any ol’ bowl lying around (we call it the “Fishbowl”) and fill it with bits of paper. Write down words on each paper, and these are the words your buddies will have to act out or describe during the game. *Tip If you’re lacking some inspiration on what ideas to write down, we found this free to use Charades Ideas Generator tool online. Select categories and it spits back ideas on movies, places famous people – pretty nifty.

  • Rounds: The game is divided into three rounds, each with a different twist.
  • Round 1 – Taboo: The reader picks a word from the Fishbowl and describes it without actually saying the word. Teammates have to guess what the word is within a time limit – say, 60 seconds. The reader keeps drawing words, and the team keeps guessing until time runs out.
  • Round 2 – Charades: This time, same words from the Fishbowl, but now, the reader has to act them out without using words. The team’s mission? To guess the word within the time limit.
  • Round 3 – One-Word Clue: The final round cranks up the challenge. The reader can only say one word to describe the word on the paper, and the team has to guess it.
  • Scoring: Keep tabs on the points each team scores during the three rounds. You can mix it up with different points for each round to add some spice
  • Rotation: After each round, switch up the readers, so everyone gets a turn to shine!
